Over 50 American Special Hockey Programs have been established in over 30 cities in the United States. The goal of Special Hockey is to give people with physical and Developmental Disabilities the chance to play the sport of Ice Hockey in an environment which is adapted to the level of ability which the athletes are able to participate.

Special Hockey exists for the enrichment of the athlete with a developmental disability. In addition to physical hockey skills, the program emphasizes the development of desirable individual characteristics such as dependability, self-reliance, concentration, willingness to share and personal accountability. The game of hockey is used by Special Hockey to develop within each player the characteristics that will help the player to be more successful both inside and outside a hockey environment.

1984 Veterans on the Lake provided recreational opportunities for 800 disabled veterans. In 2002 that number had increased to 1,300 disabled veterans.

Veterans on the Lake (VOTL) offers close proximity to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. VOTL is one of the few recreational facilities that are exclusively for disabled veterans and non-veteran disabled in the nation. VOTL is a private non-profit facility not affiliated with the Veterans Administration or any veteran's organization and there is no government subsidy.

Support for VOTL over the years has come from: the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board, Boundary Waters Conservation Alliance, Crane Lake Commercial Club, State of Minnesota, Tip of the Arrowhead Association, S.P.O.R.T.S., Area Miners and Steelworkers Association, Range Actioneers Club for the Handicapped of Hibbing, MN, Ely Area Development Council, Disabled American Veterans of MN, Assistant Commissioner of Veterans Affairs, Minnkota, Sterns, Luhr Jensen, Parker Brothers, Bi-Lateral Amputee Club of America, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Inland Steel, Lions Clubs, Women's Life Club #81, Elk's Clubs, American Legions, VFWs, US Rep. The following veterans homes have visited VOTL annually since the early years: MN Veterans Home of Hastings; Iowa City, Iowa Veterans Home; MN Veterans Home, Fergus Falls; Minneapolis Veterans Home, Minneapolis; St. Cloud Veterans Administration Hospital patients. With the facility being primarily oriented towards recreation and not for therapy the experience is still highly therapeutic.

10   Link   Camp American Legion- Wisconsin
Camp American Legion serves approximately 400 injured and disabled veterans each summer. If you are a veteran who could use physical therapy, good food, fresh air and peaceful rest, investigate a stay here. American Legion members provide the money to operate Camp American Legion, but you do not need to be a Legionnaire to qualify. All you need to be is a veteran and a resident of Wisconsin whose physician certifies that you require rest and recuperation to aid in your recovery from an operation, illness, or other affliction.

Today, the camp accommodates amputees, veterans who have had strokes, and those suffering from arthritis, nervous conditions, and Parkinson's disease. A caregiver, spouse, or family member is required if the veteran needs assistance with daily routines or care. The camp does not have a physician or nurse on staff, but in the case of an emergency, a local EMT rescue unit is available.

13   Link   Camp Patriot
Camp Patriot exists to take Disabled U.S. Veterans on outdoor adventures.

The task is monumental. Today, there are over 2.3 million disabled veterans in the U.S. The number of disabled men and women veterans is growing with each day the war on terror continues.

These brave veterans sacrificed much in order to ensure our safety and freedom. All of these veterans had dreams about the future, but many of those dreams were lost due to injuries suffered in the line of duty. Outdoor activities that they hoped to do in the future have vanished due to their disability. We want to thank these veterans by showing them that with the right help, they can again enjoy the great outdoors.
